What Child is This? | Matthew 1:18-25
This powerful exploration of Matthew 1:18-25 takes us into the heart of the incarnation—the moment when God himself entered human history as a baby. We encounter Joseph, a righteous man caught between the hammer of the law and the anvil of mercy, facing what appeared to be betrayal but was actually the greatest miracle in human existence. The virgin birth wasn't just a supernatural event; it was absolutely necessary for our salvation. Because sin nature passes through human fathers from Adam onward, Jesus needed a divine father to be born without sin. Yet he also needed to be fully human to shed human blood for human sins. This divine mystery—Jesus being truly God and truly man—changes everything. We see how God doesn't ask permission to interrupt our plans; he simply does it for our ultimate good. Joseph thought he had a problem to solve, but he actually had a Savior to raise. His immediate, unquestioning obedience challenges us to examine our own lives: Are we willing to let God disrupt our comfortable plans? The name Jesus—meaning 'Yahweh is salvation'—reminds us this isn't about following a good teacher or moral example. This is about the only perfect sacrifice, the offspring promised all the way back in Genesis 3:15 who would crush the serpent's head. We never move past the gospel; it remains the beating heart of our faith forever.
