How Should We Then Live? | 1 Corinthians 16:13-24
As we close out the book of 1 Corinthians, we are met with a series of rapid-fire commands that cut straight to the heart of how we are called to live. Be watchful. Stand firm in the faith. Act like men. Be strong. Let all that you do be done in love. These five imperatives from 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 are not suggestions for the spiritually ambitious -- they are the marching orders for every believer. The ancient city of Corinth was a place much like our own culture: driven by money, saturated with sexuality, and deeply hostile to the things of God. The church there had begun to look more like the city than like Christ. Sound familiar? We live in a world that is constantly pressuring us to soften our convictions, blend into the culture, and keep our faith quiet and private. But the call here is the opposite. We are called to plant our feet on the solid ground of Jesus Christ and refuse to be moved. Standing firm is not about stubbornness -- it is about recognizing that everything else we might try to stand on will crumble. The world shifts, politics shift, culture shifts, but the word of God does not. This passage challenges us to stop treating life like a playground and start recognizing it for what it is: a battlefield where the enemy is actively probing for weak spots. The question it leaves us with is simple and searching -- are we truly being watchful?
