Undivided | 1 Corinthians 7:25–40

We live in a culture that treats marriage as the ultimate answer to loneliness and meaning, yet the statistics tell a sobering story: only 46% of American adults are married, and nearly half of those marriages end in divorce. Against this backdrop, 1 Corinthians 7 offers us a radically different perspective. Rather than viewing the altar as a finish line, Scripture invites us to see both singleness and marriage as strategic positions for advancing God's kingdom. The passage challenges our cultural obsession with finding the right person by redirecting our focus to belonging to the right God. Paul's words about remaining as we are—whether single or married—aren't restrictive rules but liberating truths: our relationship status doesn't define us, our devotion to Christ does. The concept of 'present distress' reminds us that life is uncertain and fleeting, like a ship's sail being rolled up at journey's end. This urgency should shape how we view everything—our relationships, our resources, our time. The most powerful truth here is that earthly marriage, no matter how beautiful, is merely a shadow of the eternal marriage between Christ and His bride, the church. When we grasp this, we're freed from making marriage an idol and empowered to live with undivided devotion to the One who gave everything for us.
