Following in Faith | Matthew 14:22-23
This powerful message invites us to examine what we're clinging to when God calls us forward. Through Peter's dramatic walk on water in Matthew 14, we're challenged to step out of our comfort zones and into faith. The sermon explores a profound truth: we can be right in the center of God's will and still face opposition. The disciples were sent by Jesus himself across the Sea of Galilee, yet they encountered fierce winds and waves. Sometimes God allows us to struggle not because He doesn't care, but because we're not yet ready to receive what He wants to teach us. The imagery of Peter stepping out of the boat is striking—he didn't want to walk on water for the thrill of it, but because he wanted to be near Jesus. When we keep our eyes fixed on Christ, the impossible becomes possible. But when we focus on the storms around us, we begin to sink. What's remarkable is that the winds didn't cease until after Peter and Jesus got back into the boat together. This means they walked through the storm arm in arm. God doesn't always remove our difficulties immediately; sometimes He walks through them with us. The question we must wrestle with is this: What is our 'security blanket'—that familiar thing we're holding onto that prevents us from embracing the fuller life God has for us?
