Run To Win | 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

May 31, 2026    Brandon Mathis

This powerful message challenges us to examine whether we're truly running our spiritual race to win or merely spectating from the sidelines. Drawing from 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, we're confronted with a sobering reality: nobody drifts into holiness. The sermon uses the compelling story of Olympic runner Eric Liddell, who traded earthly gold for an eternal crown by becoming a missionary in China, ultimately dying in a Japanese internment camp while still serving Christ. This raises the central question we must all answer: are we running for temporary crowns that gather dust, or for imperishable rewards that last forever? The text reminds us that while salvation comes by grace alone through faith alone, our sanctification requires intentional effort empowered by the Holy Spirit. We're called to decide what kind of person we want to become, to stop looking back at our past, and to discipline ourselves for godliness with the same intensity athletes train for competition. The message cuts through spiritual complacency, challenging us to identify the sins and distractions that weigh us down and to cut them loose. Ultimately, we're reminded that one day we'll stand before Jesus and give an account of how we ran our race, and the goal is to hear those precious words: 'Well done, good and faithful servant.'
